Google Cloud Outage Disrupts Revolut for Nearly Eight Hours

A Google Cloud outage disrupted Revolut and other UK services on October 20 after a power event in London's europe-west2-b availability zone. Google's incident record lists 38 affected products and a duration of seven hours and 52 minutes.

The incident ran from 07:08 to 15:00 London time. Services in the affected zone became unavailable, while parts of the wider europe-west2 region experienced elevated errors and intermittent network failures. The affected products included Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, and networking services.

Revolut confirmed a service disruption and said customer money and data remained safe, according to the Associated Press. Lloyds, Halifax, and HSBC also reported interruptions. Those reports do not establish an identical technical cause for every bank's problems.

Google restored power before completing service recovery. Engineers prioritized existing workloads, while customers still had trouble creating new ones. During recovery, Google advised affected customers to move workloads to another available zone or region where feasible.

The final dashboard update said mitigation covered most customers, with engineers still assisting a small number. Google closed the tracked incident and promised an analysis after completing its internal investigation.
