OpenAI announces SearchGPT

OpenAI is announcing its much-anticipated entry into the search market, SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine with real-time access to information across the internet.

UI-wise, SearchGPT isn’t too far off from OpenAI’s chatbot platform ChatGPT. You type in a query, and SearchGPT serves up information and photos from the web along with links to relevant sources, at which point you can ask follow-up questions or explore additional, related searches in a sidebar.

SearchGPT is just a “prototype” for now. The service is powered by the GPT-4 family of models and will only be accessible to 10,000 test users at launch.

Those interested in testing the prototype can sign up for the waiting list.

In SearchGPT, users will be able to ask clarifying questions as if talking to a human and see relevant links. The company noted that sites can appear in SearchGPT results even if they have opted out of generative AI training.
