Google just dropped $40 billion on Anthropic
Google just confirmed it's investing up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, and it's kind of a massive deal even by Big Tech standards.
They're not handing over all $40B at once, though. Google puts in $10 billion right away, with the remaining $30 billion coming later, contingent on Anthropic meeting certain performance goals. Think of it like a bonus system, just with a few extra zeros.
This isn't just cash either. Google is also giving Anthropic access to a huge amount of computing power through Google Cloud 5 gigawatts of capacity over the next 5 years, with room to grow further. If you're not a tech person, that basically means Anthropic gets the hardware needed to actually run and train its AI models. Without that, money alone doesn't go very far.
Now, here's the slightly weird part: Google has its own AI, Gemini, which puts it in competition with Anthropic. So yeah, they're investing billions into a rival. It sounds strange, but it actually makes sense from a business angle: if AI is going to be huge (and it is), you'd rather own a slice of the top players than bet everything on just one horse.
And Google isn't the only one in on this. Just days before this deal was confirmed, Amazon also invested an additional $5 billion in Anthropic as part of its own separate agreement. So Anthropic now has two of the biggest tech companies on earth backing it at the same time.
There were also rumors floating around that Apple might be interested in acquiring Anthropic. Well, with Google locking in such a major stake, that door is probably closed. A $40B investment makes it very hard for anyone else to swoop in.
For regular people like us? This likely means AI tools, including Claude, will keep getting better and faster. More investment means more research, better chips, and smarter models. The AI race is very much on, and computing power is becoming just as valuable as cash in this game.
